The The return after a nine-year absence and to judge from the fanmail on the band’s website, the Viennese are mad for it. Matt Johnson, no stranger to controversy over the years, has been ostracised by his record label since deciding to permit MP3 downloads of the band’s latest album, NakedSelf, leaving them with no alternative but to market their wares on a gruelling world tour, already in its third year. So hats off to the tenaciously independent Johnson and his fine band. Expect to hear the new tunes with a good helping of ‘Uncertain Smile’, ‘This is the Day’ and other glorious 1980s anthems.

This is a welcome revival of the Tony award-winning musical chronicles the lives of Tevye and his five daughters in the impoverished Russian village of Anatevka, minutes before the revolution. This tale of maintaining warm family life in the face of prejudice and oppression is based on a collection of stories by the great Yiddish humorist Sholom Aleichem. This production stars Theodore Bikel who in his career has played the role of Tevye more than 1,600 times. The score includes such classics as ‘If I Were A Rich Man’, ‘Matchmaker, Matchmaker’ and ‘Sunrise, Sunset’.

Just on the edge of Piazzale Roma, the city bus station, the Italian Postal System has erected a handy full-service post office. It is an ideal place to exchange money as you head into town from the airport, or to drop off that last postcard on your way out. They also offer registered mail, international priority mail, telegrams and faxes. For those interested in stamp collecting pick up a few commemorative ‘francobolli’. Unfortunately, they do not post packages from this location, but the staff are unbelievably helpful with all their other services.

Formed in 1965 in memory of American civil rights activist Dr Martin Luther King Jr, the Dance Theatre of Harlem has developed an extremely wide repertoire and accumulated an impressive number of international awards. For their visit to the Shanghai Arts Festival, the company will perform several pieces, most notably John Tara’s adaptation of Stravinsky’s ‘Firebird’. The piece retains the essence of the original work but has been transferred to a tropical rainforest and elaborated with extravagant sets and costumes.

‘Cold Fusion’ is an overview of the last 10 years’ work by Rob Birza, a Dutch artist of global stature who employs a diversity of media and styles to define beauty in terms of passion and emotion. For instance, one can wander in his ‘Cold Fusion Zone’ between towering mythical figures made of ceramic while absorbing video images from India, or enter an installation piece called ‘Buddha’s Horizon/View of Light’ which reflects the raw powers of Nature as they would occur in a 1960s lamp shop.
