Formed in 1965 in memory of American civil rights activist Dr Martin Luther King Jr, the Dance Theatre of Harlem has developed an extremely wide repertoire and accumulated an impressive number of international awards. For their visit to the Shanghai Arts Festival, the company will perform several pieces, most notably John Tara’s adaptation of Stravinsky’s ‘Firebird’. The piece retains the essence of the original work but has been transferred to a tropical rainforest and elaborated with extravagant sets and costumes.
